The main factor which determines the quality of a Hakama is the fabric that is used. Polyester / rayon & polyester Hakama are the most suitable option for Aikido & Iaido, whereas Kendo practitioners generally prefer the heavier cotton indigo dyed styles. Polyester rayon are ‘easy care’ which allows them to be washed in a conventional machine and makes general folding and day to day maintenance very simple. These Hakama are of a perfect cut and shape and we would recommend them to beginners and experts alike.

Our indigo dyed Hakama are designed specifically for the Kendo practitioner and represent the finest quality Kendo Hakama available. They are made from heavy weight cotton and are coloured with the finest indigo dye. These Hakama are for the dedicated long term practitioner of Kendo and if correctly treated will last for years of regular usage. Indigo dying does however bleed heavily which leaves the practitioner rather blue! One of the advantages of this dying method is that Indigo has a natural antibacterial action which prevents the fabric’s decay and thus prolongs the Hakama’s life.
